{"id":16011,"date":"2021-04-29T10:18:08","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T08:18:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.recommon.org\/?p=16011"},"modified":"2021-04-29T10:24:04","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T08:24:04","slug":"agm-generali-recommon-urges-the-group-to-definitively-drop-coal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.recommon.org\/en\/agm-generali-recommon-urges-the-group-to-definitively-drop-coal\/","title":{"rendered":"AGM Generali \u2013 ReCommon urges the group to definitively drop coal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rome, April 29, 2021- On the occasion of the Annual General Meeting of Assicurazioni Generali, ReCommon remains concerned by the group\u2019s strategy on climate change, hoping that its new version \u2013 currently under review &#8211; will definitively put an end to the financial support to coal provided by the insurance group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answers to questions submitted by ReCommon before the Meeting do not show a bold commitment to abandon coal, paving the way for possible \u201cexceptions\u201d, thus doubling what we already witnessed in regard to the main coal companies in Central and Eastern Europe, namely PGE and \u010cEZ, who currently are in Generali\u2019s portfolio. In particular, the insurance company recognizes the need to definitively abandon coal in Europe by 2030, as recently urged by the United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres and as requested by the international scientific community, though it underlines the need as well to \u201ctake into account the large regional differences existing within the EU\u201d. That\u2019s an implicit reference to Generali\u2019s high financial interests in Poland and the Czech Republic, countries continuing to postpone the closing date of coal mines and plants jeopardizing the ecological transition in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.recommon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Turow-coal-mine-CS-Generali.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.recommon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Turow-coal-mine-CS-Generali.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.recommon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Turow-coal-mine-CS-Generali-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.recommon.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Turow-coal-mine-CS-Generali-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Turow Coal Plant. A just transition is not compatible with decarbonization plans based on fossil gas, depicted as &#8220;natural&#8221; or &#8220;transition fuel&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather, we welcome the position taken by the group on oil&amp;gas, as recently urged by ReCommon and Greenpeace Italy. Generali will make public the exclusion criteria for the exploration and production of hydrocarbons in the upcoming weeks.
